Donating Bikes, Parts, and Accesories!

We welcome everyone into the circle of gift exchange at the heart of CBPO and a bike-full community. People who currently have bicycles, parts, or accessories that they aren’t using may share them with CBPO to re-purpose and gift them to Omahans in need. Now that’s recycling.

CBPO graciously accepts: bikes, parts, helmets, locks, lights, racks, and shoes.

See below for exceptions and commonly asked questions.

CBPO accepts:

  • Bikes for adults and teens.

  • Bike parts & accessories.

  • Helmets.

  • Locks with keys.

  • Lights (with keys and mounting hardware).

  • Racks (with keys and mounting hardware).

  • Bike shoes.

CBPO does not accept:

  • Bikes that are beyond repair

  • E-bikes

  • Helmets over 5yrs old

  • Clothes with the exception of shoes

  • Locks without keys

  • Locks that are easily cut-through with bolt cutters

  • Combination bike-locks

  • Lights that don’t work

  • Lights without all associated brackets, mounts, etc.

  • Racks without all associated brackets, mounts, etc.

  • Electronics (e.g. bike computers, electric motors, actual computers, cell phones, chargers, etc.)

Q: The bike I want to give CBPO is in need of a tune-up, will you accept it?

CBPO joyfully cleans and performs basic maintenance on all bikes before they’re re-gifted out, so don’t let a small thing like a broken chain or a flat tire prevent you from bringing that bike in to us. :)

When donating bikes, bike parts, and/or bike accessories:

  • We ask that you gift in the spirit of our value of “re-purpose & re-distribute.”

  • We ask that you consider if you would continue using the bike, or if you would give it to a friend or loved one to use.

Look over your to-be-gifted bike, bike parts, and/or bike accessories before bringing it to CBPO. Does it have a second life in it? Is it being brought in the spirit of our value of “re-purpose & re-distribute”? If the answer to both of these questions is “yes”— see you at the shop!

We do not accept:

  • Bikes that have been left outside for years and are coated in rust and are beyond repair

  • Bike locks that can be cut through easily

  • Locks and racks without keys

  • Helmets that are super old (5yrs+)

  • Helmets missing straps, buckles, or padding

  • Bike clothing (except bike shoes, we take the shoes)

  • Worn out tires

  • Bent wheels

  • Electronics - bike computers, electric motors, actual computes, chargers

  • E-bikes

  • Wheelchairs

  • Scooters people use when they have a surgical boot or their leg in a cast

Q: How can I know if CBPO will accept my bike or bike parts?

Q: What if I want to give you my bike, even though it doesn’t have a second life in it? (Yup, I’m asking if CBPO can dispose of my unusable bike <3)

If your bike has been neglected, stored outside too long, exposed to extreme elements, or something else, and simply has no more life in it, you may leave it with CBPO to dispose of only with a minimum financial gift of $25 (our hourly labor). This tax-deductible donation covers the labor that’s required by our staff to properly dispose of the bicycle.

CBPO will accept your financial gift of $25, or more, when you drop the bike off at our shop at 525 N 33rd Street during regular business hours.

If you happen to bring in clothing and electronics, we will ask that you take them to one of the many other locations around town that accept these items. (a list of places will be coming soon!)

If you happen to bring in a bike-related item that is beyond repair but you want to leave it with CBPO to dispose of it, you may do so only with a corresponding minimum cash gift $25* to cover the labor that’s required by our staff. This cash gift is tax deductible.

Q: What happens if I bring in an item and CBPO doesn't accept it?

Q: May I have a receipt for my gifted item, because it’s a donation?

Of course you may! Click here for a PDF of the 2024 receipt (in Google) to download. Please keep hold of this receipt for your tax purposes; CBPO doesn’t keep any copies. Tax benefits for charitable contributions are available only to taxpayers who itemize deductions. To claim a deduction on taxes, the donor determines the fair market value of the contribution(s). No goods or services are provided to donors by CBPO. And, once again, a reminder that we do not retain copies of tax receipts.

Q: Why doesn’t CBPO accept e-bikes? (aren’t they like cool ‘n stuff?)

Currently, it is not safe to store e-bikes in our shop. We do not have a fire-protective location to store the batteries. We anticipate changing this policy soon, but do not have a set date.

Q: Can CBPO pick up my gifted bike, bike part, or bike accessory?

With regret, CBPO isn’t yet able to pick up single gifted items from individual’s residences. We simply don’t have the capacity to do so. We hope to have this capacity in the future and will keep everyone posted.

Still have some leftover questions?

Please feel free to call our store during open hours at (402) 957-2425 or email us at info@communitybikeproject.org and we will get back to you as soon as we are able!
