Who We Are

The Community Bike Project of Omaha is dedicated to…

creating a city in which all residents experience a high quality of life and thriving sense of personal agency as a result of universal access to bicycle ridership.

The Community Bike Project of Omaha is the only place locally for people of all ages to acquire bikes, tools, and cycling education without financial barriers.

MISSION:

Community Bike Project of Omaha directly connects Omahans in need with bicycles to own, the space and tools to maintain their bikes, and the skills and knowledge to independently repair and safely ride their bikes.

VISION:

We desire an Omaha that’s equitable, sustainable, healthy, safe, and joyful–a city in which all residents experience a high quality of life and a thriving sense of personal agency–resulting from universal access to bicycle ridership. In our vision of a bike-full Omaha, bicycles serve as a leading mode of everyday transportation, a primary recreation choice, and a clearly identified source of community-building.

VALUES:

Bicycle ridership promotes interconnection and more liveable, healthy, joyful communities. Bicycling improves our physical and mental wellbeing, which allows us to co-regulate with one another more successfully (on and off the road) and decrease our city’s carbon footprint.

Communal Responsibility:

People of all backgrounds and identities should be treated with dignity and mutual respect, and deserve access to reliable and affordable transportation.

Equity & Accessibility:

Bikes and parts can be recycled and recombined to create all new vehicles. In the equation of gifting, the giver and the receiver are equally important. These cycles of exchange bridge community members and raise social awareness about consumption and waste, need and use. Reciprocity and sustainability are amplified.

Re-Purpose & Re-Distribute:

Hands-on, practical education emboldens learners to ride and repair their own bikes, and subsequently pass on their knowledge with others.

Learning by Doing:

The Community Bike Project of Omaha is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2007 by volunteers and activists as an open shop space where folks could come and work on their bike for free. What started as a volunteer-run transportation equity initiative, is now a staff-run and volunteer-supported nonprofit bike shop and trusted community space, open year-round. The Community Bike Project of Omaha offers use of tools, space, and resources to maintain bikes, training in bike safety and repair, and–most importantly–low to no cost refurbished bicycles to Omahans of all ages.
